Angry crowds have attacked government buildings in south-west China in protest at the death of a teenage girl.

Reports said several thousand people took part in the riots, setting fire to police stations and cars in Wengan county in the province of Guizhou.

Local residents were angered after a police inquiry concluded that the girl, found dead in a river earlier in June, had committed suicide.

Her family accused the son of a local official of raping and killing her.

Order 'restored'

"Local residents were very angry about the injustice exercised by local authorities," one resident, who is a local official, told Reuters news agency.

"About 10,000 people rushed to the site and totally burned down the county party office building, and burned other offices in the county government.

"They also burned about 20 vehicles, including police cars," the official said.

AFP news agency said riots had erupted on Saturday when the girl's uncle was pronounced dead in hospital after seeking justice for his niece.

It quoted locals saying he had been badly beaten - it is not clear by whom.

Chinese news reports said provincial leaders had gone to the area to deal with the unrest.

Xinhua news agency said order began to return after crowds dispersed early on Sunday morning local time.

BEIJING - Authorities detained hundreds of people suspected of setting fire to police and government buildings in southwest China in protests over a teenage student's death, a human rights organization said Monday.

The unrest in Weng'an, a county in Guizhou province, on Saturday was sparked by the death of a 16-year-old student who was reportedly raped and murdered, the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said.

Citing the girl's relatives, the rights center said she disappeared after being called away by three young men, two of whom were related to officials in the county's public security bureau.

The men were interrogated for a day and then released, the organization said.

By midday Monday, police and armed police had detained 300 protesters who allegedly took part in the violence, the rights center said. Some were taken to detention centers, it said.

Liu Zhongmin, a teacher at the No. 3 Middle School in Weng'an County, where the girl studied, said an initial investigation conducted by the county's medical expert determined that the girl had drowned.

Further investigations by higher level medical experts and authorities have not concluded, but residents fear the same results will be reached, Liu said.

"The girl's teacher is now explaining the whole situation to her fellow students, trying to keep them calm," he said.

In the wake of the violence, local television stations broadcast notices asking "suspected criminals" to turn themselves in, residents said.

Telephones were not answered at the Weng'an public security bureau and county government office. A male employee at Qiannan prefecture's public security bureau, which oversees Weng'an, said the investigation into the student's death was still under way. Like many Chinese officials, he refused to give his name or position.

Violent protests have broken out across the country in recent years as citizens vent anger over official corruption, land confiscation and a growing gap between the rich and poor.

They have been a thorn in the side of the Communist leadership, which has made building what it calls a "harmonious society" a priority, and is especially embarrassing with the Aug. 8 Beijing Olympics only weeks away.

A report in the Guizhou Daily said Monday a few "unlawful" elements incited others to "smash and burn" government offices and set fire to some cars.

The official Xinhua News Agency carried a short story about the violence, blaming it on unhappiness over the official ruling over the girl's death.

The report did not provide details about the official finding or the cause of death, but said order had been restored.

WENG'AN, China - An investigation into the death of a teenage girl will be reopened after accusations of a police cover-up led to rioting in this southwest China town, a state news agency reported Tuesday.

The widespread protests in Weng'an, a town in hilly Guizhou province, stemmed from an official report on the death of a high school student and allegations that a suspect in the case was related to a local official, residents said.

Residents believe Li Shufen — whose body was pulled from a river June 22 — was raped and murdered. An initial police report found that the girl drowned, causing 30,000 people to swarm to the streets in anger Saturday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Xinhua had quoted vice county chief Xiao Song as saying a preliminary investigation found no links between children of local officials and the girl.

But Xinhua reported Tuesday that the investigation would be reopened.

"The provincial government has sent 10 criminal investigators and forensic experts to reinvestigate the death," it said.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said that in the original investigation, officials questioned three young men but let them go.

The unrest is especially sensitive for China ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August and officials have repeatedly stressed the need to keep order. President Hu Jintao and top security officials have issued important instructions for the case, according to the Guizhou Daily.

Xinhua also ran a commentary about the unrest headlined, "How difficult is it for the people to be given the truth?" The article said more information should be released.

"Originally this was a simple murder case, and for the local law enforcement agencies giving people a satisfactory answer and giving people the truth should not be hard," it said.

In the unrest, the local police building was set on fire and its windows were broken. By Tuesday, burned out cars had been removed from the front of the building, and parts of town were returning to normal, with residents shopping and walking around.

Provincial Communist Party Secretary Shi Zongyuan visited the area to stress "the importance of social stability," Xinhua said.

"We must put maintaining social harmony and stability on the top of our agenda," Shi was quoted as saying.

The provincial public security bureau said Tuesday that its chief was at a meeting and did not comment. The Weng'an Public Security Bureau lines rang busy.

Riots and protests by local citizens over official corruption, land confiscation and a growing gap between the rich and poor have been an increasing problem for China's communist leaders in recent years.

SHANGHAI (AFP) - An unemployed Chinese man armed with a knife killed five policemen in Shanghai on Tuesday when he went on a stabbing frenzy in what authorities said was a revenge attack.

The killer, a 28-year-old Beijing native surnamed Yang, confessed he had wanted revenge after police arrested him in October on suspicion of stealing bicycles.

He stabbed nine officers and a security guard at a police station in the north of the city, the Shanghai public security bureau said in a statement.

Yang was quickly overpowered and arrested, police said, but five police died in the attack.

"He was unhappy ... In order to take revenge, he decided to commit criminal actions," the statement said. Press reports said he was unemployed.

The killings occurred as China was gearing up for next month's 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, an event that has resulted in stepped up police security throughout the nation.

According to the statement, Yang set a fire outside the police station's front gate at around 9:40 am local time, attracting a security guard's attention. He stabbed the guard and then charged into the station.

"He broke into the building, attacking policemen who were at work," the statement said.

Xinhua news agency identified two of the dead officers as Fang Fuxin, 47 and Zhang Jianping, 48. Both died of traumatic hemorrhagic shock in the lower right lung, the report said, citing doctors.

Police in blood-soaked clothes were seen being carried out, the state-run Eastday.com news website reported, citing witnesses.

Some of the officers had chest injuries while others' faces were bloody, Xinhua said citing a witnesses.

"When the four (policemen) were carried into the emergency room, their bodies were soaked with blood and their faces were pale," Xinhua quoted a witnessed surnamed Jia at the Changzheng hospital as saying.

"The scene was too horrible to watch."

At least one officer was declared dead upon arrival at hospital within half an hour of the attack and another died shortly afterwards, a Changzheng Hospital spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity.

Two other officers were in intensive care, but their conditions were stable, she added.

Officials refused to comment at Beizhan hospital where the other victims were taken.

Violent crime is unusual in China, but the speed with which Tuesday's attack was reported by Shanghai's state media was also rare.

Eastday.com published frequent updates, posting news of the deaths well before officials were ready to confirm them.

Authorities, however, quickly pulled pictures off one photo sharing website that showed blood pooling in the gutter outside the station.

The killings come after up to 30,000 people took to the streets in a county town in China's southwest Guizhou province on Saturday, protesting and rioting over a police investigation into the death of a teenage girl.

Protesters claimed the girl had been raped and killed by a relative of a local official who had ordered the police to cover up the crime.

On Tuesday, central authorities reopened the case and in a rare acknowledgement admitted that the unrest was due to dissatisfaction with the government.
